ParksGracemont Park Improvements ComingA generous donation of $7500 has been dedicated for Gracemont Park by an anonymous doner, who suggested it be used as seed money for a Salem Park Improvement Fund (SPIF) grant. SPIF grants provide matching money. Currently, the Faye Wright Neighborhood Association is accepting donations of labor, materials, and cash. These donations along with the initial $7500 will be matched dollar for dollar, provided we win the SPIF grant. It was suggested at our August meeting that money matched for labor donations is about $20 per hour! If you or someone you know is interested in pledging time, material, or money, please email us soon, as the application for this grant is due in November. Work will start as early as next spring. Suggested improvements include replacing legacy play equipment, plus providing water and lighting. This park has a lot of potential. Help us to form Gracemont Park into a gem. Just a few hours of your time can go a long way. For more information or to pledge, email us at parks@fayewright.org. Parks Revenue and Master Plan Task ForceThe Parks Revenue and Master Plan Task Force is in full swing with 16 members, three staff liaisons, and a contract planner leading the planning effort. The group is currently reviewing documents originating from the previous planning effort in 2008, and will begin to develop park master plan policies and revenue funding options over the next several months. The public is invited to attend these meetings, which provide an opportunity for public comment on every agenda. The meeting dates and locations can be found on the City of Salem's "Parks Revenue and Master Plan Update" webpage. If you have any questions about this committee or the content of their discussions, contact Toni Whitler, Parks and Transportation Services Division, 503-588-6336, or twhitler@cityofsalem.net. This article has been revived and lightly edited from the April 2011 edition of Community Connection. The original is available in Portable Document Format (PDF), and can be found on page 15 of Volume 1, Issue 11.
